“He wanted to fly everything,” Tindal reminded her. “He’d go into the cockpit or squadron office and beg to be allowed a shot at the controls. And when they’d say yes, he’d hog the controls as long as he could. I heard he did the same when he was attached to the French Foreign Legion.”

“I remember him,” Alice repeated. She was all too aware she was allowing her irritation to show, but she was too tired to care. “So what?”

“The aliens are travelling onboard a starship that has to be fantastically advanced, by their standards,” Tindal said. “Why haven't they asked for a tour? Or even a copy of the Child’s Guide to Spacecraft? Instead, they're just sitting in their quarters ... doing bugger-all. They’re not even reading their own books, let alone ours.”
